Kayakalpa Treatment in Kerala

Kayakalpa is the process of Rejuvenation. The Word Rejuvenation derives from the two terms “Kaya means Body and “Kalpa means strong as stone. Rejuvenation helps to prolong the life of human beings and prevent aging, graying of hair, wrinkling, and even death. According to Ayurveda, Longevity or Rejuvenation is not only essential to keep the body healthy but also helpful in purifying the soul by preserving the body so as to attain salvation or the ultimate truth. Kayakalpa treatment in Kerala refers to a rejuvenation therapy that aims to promote overall well-being, vitality, and longevity. It is a specialized Ayurvedic treatment that combines various therapeutic techniques and herbal preparations to cleanse the body, strengthen the immune system, and restore balance to the doshas (energetic forces) in the body.

Kayakalpa treatment is based on the panchabootha panchikaranam. Humans have 5 components and 3 humors (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). This homeostasis can vary for pathological or seasonal reasons, causing illnesses. The initial step in this treatment is detoxifying cells and restoring normal humor.

Three types of treatments are used for the detoxification process

Virechana or Purgation: Vata sufferers receive this therapy. This treatment helps in flushing out the impurities from the body and the body gets ready for kayakalpa or general treatment.

Vamana or Vomiting therapy: Pitta-aggravated individuals receive this treatment. This reduces phlegm and mucus in the respiratory tract. Disease, age, and physical condition determine the drug dose.

Nasya: Kapha sufferers should instill 1–5 drops of medicinal oil in each nostril to eliminate excess mucus and toxins from the sinuses and nasal canal. Patients’ age, body type, and condition determine their oil. Chronic sinusitis, respiratory issues, and headaches benefit from this treatment.

After the internal detoxification and cleansing of the body external purification will start.

The external treatment of the body includes:

Thokkanam: Physical manipulation includes nine types of various massage and Varma techniques. The patient reports Varma or Marma massage for the Head, Spine, Face, and Full Body.

Vedhu: Herbal steam bath

Lepanam: Medicated paste for joint pain, dry skin, swelling in joints, etc.

Shirodhara: Herbal preparations as the liquid is poured on the forehead or body.

Kizhi: Medicated bundles used for fomentation or heat application after general body massage or thokkanam. Different patients receive different types of kizhi treatments based on their specific needs. Various types of Kizhi available are podi kizhi, ela kizhi, njavarakizhi, naranga kizhi, tavidu kizhi, mutta kizhi, and mamsa kizhi.
